New Ways to Increase a Google Page Rank

Think back to a few years ago: blogs were all the rage, the new kid on the block. People didn't know an AdSense ad from a regular link. It was a more innocent world for internet marketing and it was far easier to increase a page rank in Google than it is today. The proliferation of spam sites and nonsense blogs has filled up the Internet with sites that need to be blocked out. In one sense, this is good news because when you search for something in Google, you'll be more likely to get results relevant to your search. But it also means that it's a lot harder to rank because a lot of the tactics for increasing page rank are now outdated.

Some of these outdated practices include:

1. Submitting sites to article directories - you're currently reading one. A site like EzineArticles will filter out articles that are duplicates from other sites. It used to be that you could publish the same article 1000 times over with 1000 links to your site and it would almost instantly increase your rank. Now duplicate content filters mean that only 1 of those 1000 will actually end up in Google's index.

2. Commenting on blogs. Not that this is a bad idea, but people don't realize that many links on blogs do not provide PR strength. Blog links use the "nofollow" tag, which means search engines spiders will not follow your link off the blog. It's like your site is invisible.

That's just a couple of issues that are not nearly as effective as they used to be - mostly because people abused the privilege and overloaded the web with useless content. So nowadays a search engine optimizer needs to be a little more creative. Here are some ways that are still effective at increasing a page rank in Google and will continue to help increase page rank in the future.

1. Write topical posts. It's virtually impossible to say something new about old topics. It's much easier to take a page viral that is a reaction to the day's news, rather than a topic that might be covered elsewhere (this article doesn't entirely follow that model, but you get the picture).

2. Also, don't be afraid to be trivial. Entertaining, fluffy posts are much more likely to get backlinks (links from other sites). Of course, they need to be well-written. Including images or video within content is also a good way to help a page go viral.

3. Write unique content. As mentioned, article sites may not post duplicated articles. However, they will post original articles. It's possible to write many different ways about the same subject.

4. Get yourself a browser plugin that reveals dofollow links. This will show you which blogs, forums, and sites have dofollow enabled. Concentrate your marketing primarily towards dofollow sites. There are directories online that contain only dofollow websites. Check the page rank for dofollow sites and target your marketing towards sites with a high page rank. Think about linking to high page rank dofollow blogs, because this will create a trackback, which is an easy link back to your site.

5. Get a plugin to remove nofollow on your own site - this will inspire interaction on the site. Increased commenting means that your website will be spidered and indexed more frequently.

6. Use the Google AdWords tool or other keyword tool and use those keywords in title tags. Make sure your site titles include the actual words in the title, as opposed to a number.

7. Validate your site at W3.org to make sure that spiders can comb through your site. validator.w3.org. Google's Webmaster Tool is also good for monitoring your internal links to make sure none are broken.

8. Use social networks: Digg, Reddit, Mixx, all those places that have double letters. Remember, a Digg link to an article is possibly going to rank higher than an article on your own site, as Digg has a high PR. Getting a lot of Diggs for a post isn't the only issue: it's about getting your Digg page indexed, which is a quality backlink to your site. The same goes for other social networks. Join every social network you can and create a profile page with an outbound link to your site.

9. Join forums and add your signature. Participate long enough (and usefully) to add a signature. Your profile page will also include a link. Many forums are dofollow throughout.

10. Add your site to directories. This still works. Add your site to high PR one-way-link site directories, as well as blog directories, if appropriate. It's better to do this manually, rather than with an automated system, because getting too many directory listings all at once can actually diminish your page rank.

OK, that should be enough to get you started. A little effort spent each day will significantly improve your results over time. The best thing about these methods is that they're organic: they're not likely to get banned by Google or other search engines, so it won't be time wasted.
