The goal of the search engine is not to return the best optimized page but instead to return the page that most relates to the searchers request.

Avoid putting outbound links on your key landing pages. Landing pages are pages where you want your visitors to "land" or enter your site. Many sites have one landing page, the home page of the site. If you have multiple keywords and multiple directions for your site, it is advisable to optimize a page towards a specific keyword. Many search engines rank your pages based upon an algorithm that increases based upon related incoming links and decreases based upon outgoing links.

Resist using words similar to "Link Exchange", "Add Link", "Add URL" and "Link Partners". These phrases can decrease your page rank of a page. It is normally advisable to put these phrases and outgoing links on one page, optimally not a landing page.

Keep in mind that formatting of your text can also cause a decrease in your page rank. For instance, many SEO experts theorize that using the same phrase for the Page Title and the H1 tag can adversely effect the page rank. Furthermore many fear that more than one H1 (header) tag can also result in a lower rank. Some SEO experts won't even use an H1 tag and will instead use an H2 (header) tag instead.

Absolutely DO NOT pay for one of these get 500 links for 10/mo schemes. Most of these are links from a page (the same content page) that "affiliates" have put on their site for a price. The search engines can penalize a website for taking part in one of these schemes, and can also determine that, overnight you have 500 new links coming into your site so they can't be natural, so ignore the links.

Keep in mind that if it sounds to good to be true it probably is. The best links are the links to content on your site that webmasters have found so valuable that they want to link to it. Usually this is a blog, or articles, or even tools usable by your visitors.
